Governor O’Malley Signs Historic Firearms Safety Act

Governor Martin O’Malley has signed into law the Firearm Safety Act of 2013 — a measure that will save lives and reduce gun violence in the State of Maryland. We commend the Governor and Maryland General Assembly for having the courage to enact solutions that work.

The key provision of the new law, licensing of handgun purchasers with a fingerprint-based background check, already saves lives in five states and will soon save lives in Maryland. For those states and our national leaders that are truly interested in taking action to reduce gun violence, this law should serve as a national model.

In Maryland, 68% of gun owners support this common sense solution to prevent gun violence. The people of Maryland can be proud of Governor O’Malley, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Senate President Mike Miller, House Speaker Mike Busch, Senator Brian Frosh, Delegate Kathleen Dumais and so many others who had the courage to stand up for solutions that work to save lives.
